Teacher Awarded Scholarship to Attend Civil War Institute

NHS U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher, Miss Anita Slater, will be attending the Civil War Institute, run by Gettysburg College, this summer after being awarded the Robert Glass Endowment Teacher Scholarship.

Miss Slater had learned about the scholarship opportunity and Civil War conference while attending other conferences at Gettysburg College; however, she felt winning the scholarship would be a long shot since only two are awarded each year.  She went ahead and submitted her resume as well as an essay.  Her essay focused on how the conference would contribute to her own professional development while also benefitting her students since the Civil War is a key component in both her eighth grade U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History classes.   Much to Anita’s surprise, she was recently notified that was selected as a winner.

The Civil War Institute conference will be held the second week of June.  Throughout the week long conference, Anita will be attending lectures, roundtable discussions, and break-out sessions about all aspects of the Civil War, from the various causes of the war to the political, economic, military, and social aspects of the war. One day of the conference will also include a day long tour into Virginia to visit a Civil War battlefield (Cedar Mountain).  Another day will include a half day tour to the Gettysburg battlefield.

Miss Slater feels fortunate to have been able to attend other conferences similar to this in the past, and is looking forward to attending the conference this summer!   We are very excited for Miss Slater to have this incredible professional development experience, and cannot wait to see how she will use this conference to enhance the educational experience of her students at NHS!

Miss Slater is an extremely deserving recipient of the Robert Glass Endowment Teacher Scholarship.  Congratulations, Anita!
